"The issue with biodiesel has been cost. Since a high fraction of the cost is in the production of the oilseed, a low input crop like camelina is desirable."

Earth Day test is first supersonic flight to use 50-50 camelina-based, traditional jet fuel mix
April 23, 2010 - Bozeman, MT - Sustainable Oils, a producer of renewable, low carbon and domestically produced camelina-based fuels, supplied the camelina-based biojet fuel that successfully powered yesterday's Earth Day test flight of the U.S. Navy's F/A-18 “Green Hornet” aircraft. Taking place at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Patuxent River, Maryland, the flight was the first to demonstrate the performance of a 50-50 blend of camelina-based biojet fuel and traditional petroleum-based jet fuel at supersonic speeds. Yesterday's use of this camelina-based fuel, which was produced by Honeywell's UOP using its renewable jet fuel process technology, marks a significant milestone in the certification and operational use of camelina-based biofuels in military aircraft.

First aviation flight to have 50-50 traditional-renewable fuel mix in all engines
March 26, 2010 - Bozeman, MT - Sustainable Oils, a producer of renewable, low carbon and domestically produced camelina-based fuels, powered the historic and successful flight of a U.S. Air Force A-10C Thunderbolt II which flew on a 50-50 blend of camelina-based jet fuel and traditional jet fuel. The 90-minute flight, which took place March 25th at Eglin Air Force Base, in Florida marked the first time that any aircraft has been powered by conventional and biomass-based fuel in all engines. Subsequent purchase agreements for up to 750 million gallons of renewable fuels would remove 14 billion pounds of C02 over 10 years
New biojet production facility to be built in Washington state
SEATTLE (December 15, 2009) Seattle-based AltAir Fuels today announced it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with 14 major airlines from the United States, Mexico, Canada and Germany, led by the Air Transport Association (ATA), to negotiate the purchase of up to 750 million gallons of renewable jet fuel and diesel derived from camelina and produced by AltAir Fuels. This unprecedented announcement demonstrates the airlines’ determination to reduce emissions and accelerate the deployment of renewable jet fuel. The renewable fuel, to be produced at a new facility in Anacortes, Wash., would replace about 10 percent of the petroleum fuel consumed annually at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, reducing carbon emissions by about 14 billion pounds over 10 years.
